Many IELTS candidates lose precious marks in Writing Task 2 not because their ideas are weak, but because their paragraphs feel disjointed. The secret to a Band 7+ response often lies in mastering discourse markers — the invisible threads that weave sentences into a cohesive, logical argument.

The Rule

Discourse markers (also called cohesive devices in IELTS) are words or phrases that signal the relationship between ideas. They are essential for achieving Cohesion and Coherence, one of the four key scoring criteria in IELTS Writing Task 2.

Key distinction: Cohesion refers to the linguistic tools (like discourse markers) that connect sentences, while coherence is the overall logical flow of your argument.

1. Categories of Discourse Markers by Function

Discourse markers are classified by the type of relationship they signal. Using a variety of these in your writing demonstrates range and precision — both of which are rewarded in the IELTS rubric.

2. Grammar & Punctuation Rules

Even the most sophisticated discourse markers will lose you marks if used incorrectly. Pay close attention to punctuation — this is where most candidates slip up.

2a. Conjunctive Adverbs (Sentence Connectors)

An independent clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb that expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. A dependent clause contains a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone.

Words like however, therefore, moreover, consequently, furthermore, and nevertheless connect two independent clauses. When used to connect two independent clauses, they are typically punctuated in one of two ways:

Punctuation Patterns

Pattern A: [Independent clause]. [Discourse marker], [independent clause].
Example: The results were inconclusive. Therefore, further research is needed.

Pattern B: [Independent clause]; [discourse marker], [independent clause].
Example: The results were inconclusive; therefore, further research is needed.

⚠️ Common Error: Using a comma before the discourse marker (comma splice).

Incorrect vs Correct

Incorrect: The city is overcrowded, moreover it is polluted.
Correct: The city is overcrowded. Moreover, it is increasingly polluted.
Correct: The city is overcrowded; moreover, it is increasingly polluted.

2b. Subordinating Conjunctions

Words like although, even though, because, and while introduce a dependent clause. They are embedded within a sentence and do not require a semicolon or full stop before them.

Correct Usage

Although the policy was well-intentioned, it failed to achieve its goals.
✅ The policy failed to achieve its goals, although it was well-intentioned.
Incorrect: Although the policy was well-intentioned. It failed to achieve its goals. (sentence fragment)

2c. Transitional Phrases

Longer phrases such as on the other hand, in addition to this, and as a result of this follow the same punctuation rules as conjunctive adverbs.

Transitional Phrases

On the other hand, critics argue that economic growth must not come at the cost of environmental damage.

3. Common Errors to Avoid

Here are the most frequent mistakes Indian candidates make with discourse markers in IELTS Writing:

Common Errors and Corrections

However I agree with this view, there are drawbacks."However", as a conjunctive adverb, requires a comma after it and cannot be used as a subordinating conjunction to introduce a dependent clause. However, I agree that there are merits to this view; there are also significant drawbacks.
The city is overcrowded, moreover, it is polluted. Two independent clauses cannot be joined with only a comma (comma splice). A full stop or semicolon is required. The city is overcrowded. Moreover, it is increasingly polluted.
Although the economy grew. Unemployment remained high.Although introduces a dependent clause — it cannot stand alone as a sentence.Although the economy grew, unemployment remained high.
Firstly... Secondly... Thirdly... Finally...Mechanical, formulaic sequencing with no variation. It signals a lack of sophisticated cohesion. To begin with... Furthermore... A further consideration is... In conclusion...
In conclusion, I think that in my opinion...Redundant markers. In conclusion and in my opinion overlap in function and register. Avoid personal phrases in formal IELTS writing. In conclusion, this argument demonstrates that...

4. Model Paragraph Analysis

Read the following IELTS Task 2 body paragraph. The discourse markers are highlighted. Analyse how each one functions to create cohesion.

The widespread adoption of remote working has brought considerable advantages for employees. For instance, workers are able to eliminate lengthy commutes, which translates into significant savings in both time and money. Furthermore, studies have shown that remote employees often report higher levels of job satisfaction and productivity. However, it would be an oversimplification to ignore the drawbacks. Admittedly, some individuals struggle with isolation and the blurring of professional and personal boundaries. Nevertheless, on balance, the flexibility that remote work affords outweighs its disadvantages, provided that organisations implement appropriate support structures.

✏️ Quick Practice — Identify the Function

Identify the function of each highlighted discourse marker in the paragraph above:

  1. For instance → __________________
  2. Furthermore → __________________
  3. However → __________________
  4. Admittedly → __________________
  5. Nevertheless → __________________

Answers: 1. Exemplification  |  2. Addition  |  3. Contrast  |  4. Concession  |  5. Contrast

5. Practice Exercises

✏️ Exercise 1: Identification

Read the paragraph and underline all discourse markers. Then write the function of each one in the space provided.

"Urban expansion is one of the most pressing issues of the twenty-first century. In particular, the rapid growth of megacities in Asia and Africa has placed enormous strain on infrastructure. Consequently, governments are struggling to provide adequate housing, clean water, and transportation. Moreover, urban pollution has reached dangerous levels in several cities. Despite this, migration from rural areas continues to accelerate, owing to limited economic opportunities in the countryside. In conclusion, sustainable urban planning must be treated as a global priority."

Discourse Markers Found:

  1. __________________ → Function: __________________

✏️ Exercise 3: Sentence Combining

Join each pair of sentences using an appropriate discourse marker from the box. Use each marker only once.

Markers to use: however  |  as a result  |  in addition  |  for instance  |  on the other hand

  1. Many young people prefer urban life. The cost of living in cities is very high.
    ________________________________________________________________________
  2. The new public transport system has reduced traffic congestion. It has also lowered carbon emissions.

Answers: 1. Many young people prefer urban life; on the other hand, the cost of living in cities is very high.  |  2. The new public transport system has reduced traffic congestion. In addition, it has lowered carbon emissions.  |  3. Remote learning offers flexibility; however, some students find it difficult to stay motivated at home. (Note: "however" and "on the other hand" are interchangeable between sentences 1 and 3.)  |  4. The government introduced stricter food labelling regulations. As a result, consumers became more informed about nutrition.  |  5. Several developed nations have invested heavily in renewable energy; for instance, Germany has committed to 100% renewables by 2035.

✏️ Exercise 4: Paragraph Improvement

The paragraph below lacks cohesion. Rewrite it by adding appropriate discourse markers to link the ideas smoothly. You may restructure sentences if necessary.

"Fast food consumption has risen dramatically over the past two decades. Fast food is convenient and affordable. It is linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Many governments have introduced taxes on sugary drinks and junk food. Fast food companies continue to invest heavily in advertising. Young people are particularly susceptible to these marketing campaigns. Healthier dietary habits need to be promoted from an early age."

Improved Paragraph:

Sample Answer: Fast food consumption has risen dramatically over the past two decades, largely because it is both convenient and affordable. However, it is also closely linked to serious health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Although several governments have introduced taxes on sugary drinks and junk food, fast food companies continue to invest heavily in advertising. Consequently, young people remain particularly susceptible to these marketing campaigns. For this reason, healthier dietary habits must be actively promoted from an early age if long-term public health is to be protected.

✏️ Exercise 5: IELTS Writing Task 2 – Mini Practice

Write one body paragraph (120–150 words) on the topic below. Use at least four different discourse markers. After writing, underline each discourse marker you have used and write its function in the margin.

Topic: 'The advantages of international travel for young people far outweigh the disadvantages.' Do you agree or disagree?

Self-check: How many discourse markers did you use? _______
Did you vary the categories (addition, contrast, result, etc.)? Yes / No

Quick Reference: Discourse Marker Checklist

Use this checklist when reviewing your IELTS Task 2 writing to ensure you’re using discourse markers effectively:

  • Variety: Have I used markers from at least 3–4 different functional categories?
  • Accuracy: Are conjunctive adverbs and transitional phrases correctly punctuated (semicolon/full stop + comma)?
  • Avoid overuse: Have I used no more than 1–2 markers per sentence?
  • Register: Are all markers appropriately formal? (Avoid: but, so, also at the start of a sentence.)
  • Logic: Does each marker accurately reflect the logical relationship between the ideas it connects?
  • Avoid formulaic sequences: Replace Firstly... Secondly... Thirdly... with varied and sophisticated markers.

Summary

Discourse markers are the glue that holds your IELTS Writing Task 2 response together. They signal relationships between ideas, guide the reader through your argument, and demonstrate Cohesion and Coherence, one of the four key scoring criteria in IELTS Writing Task 2.

Key takeaway: Mastering discourse markers is not just about memorising a list — it’s about using them strategically to create a seamless, persuasive argument. Practise incorporating them naturally into your writing, and always double-check your punctuation!
